menuDisplay does not work unless ShowMenu is used first.

Please help me with what must be a simple question. I have a several menus on a page, but 1 has alwaysvisible set to 0. I would like to display this menu on demand using menuDisplay, but it will not show unless I have first used showmenu on another menuitem to display it. once i have done this, it shows up when I click the link that is supposed to open it (the one using menuDisplay).

is there a way to pre load the menu without displaying it, so it is ready?
