horizontal menu problems

When i create a horizontal sub menu, all the sub menu items appear stacked on top of each other. If I set a width for the submenu then they appear approximately like they should, but my understanding of the menu is that if you don't explicitly define a width, the width becomes that of the menu item (length of the menu item characters)...This is what I would prefer to explicitly defining a width.

Any ideas?
