Accessing style sheet from menu item

Is it possible to access a defined css style from within the menu? I have noticed that link targets can be defined as well as hrefs but adding a class= or id= attribute has no effect.

Specifically I want to have a mouseover on a submenu item produce an underline effect. A search of the board revealed only one similar question and the response was that the menu supported bold and italics but not underline. However, it would seem that a hack to create an underline should be fairly simple if bold and italics are available.

I've already spent some time configuring your menu but my client has specifically requested this underline effect (they are an ACT reseller and want something similar to http://www.act.com). If there's an easy fix I'll gladly pay for a copy for this client and probably many others. If not I'll have to move on to another solution. Thanks for your help!
