How to set a menu item as inactive

Is it possible to set a menuitem as inactive. I'd like to be able to setup the menu with all options but have some options greyed out and not clickable when appropriate. Is there a menuitem property or similar which I can manipulate as required?

I suppose you could:

//double hash in front to not show the menu item
type=header; (change the item to a header, include header style)
remove the url completely

I usually just remove the URL and add a grey colour to the items.

However, it would be nice if there was a feature that automatically made the menu item grey if there was no URL.
