alt text on menu arrows

We are working on Section 508 compliance which requires all images to have an alt tag. I want to set the subimage menu arrows to alt="" [null], which tells assistive technology not to bother the user with information about this image.

To test the site, I'm using the Images function in version 2 of the free Web Accessibility Toolbar for IE (http://www.paciellogroup.com/resources/ ... about.html). Null alt text attributes are valid; errors are reported when an image has no alt tag at all.

I searched the posts and found a (relatively old) entry about using imagealt="" for this purpose. I tried this, but it didn't work (all the menu arrows were listed as errors due to missing alt tags). I also tried coding this as subimagealt="" (thinking it needed to be tied to the specific image). This didn't work either.

An interior test page for the site is located here: http://www.johnscreekga.gov/sig/newmenu/interior.html, and the menu_data.js file is here: http://www.johnscreekga.gov/sig/newmenu ... nu_data.js.

Thank you for any help you can provide!

Sue

Hi,

I have posted this to Milonic to see if this is possible. It's not a question I've ever seen on the forum :)
