Drop shadows on drop-down menus [solutions provided]

Hi

I am looking for a menu system that will let me achieve semi-transparent drop-shadows on the drop-down menu itself similar to the drop shadows that all browser menus have, and that will work with all css2-capable browsers. For instance overlib and overlibmws pop-ups support drop-shadows that work even in IE4 and Netscape 4. Is this possible to achieve with Milonic menus?

Many thanks, Ruth. However when I view your mock-up on my system I can't see any drop-shadows on the drop-down menus, although I can see right and bottom borders. The look I'm trying to achieve is similar to the Firefox menu that I've screen captured at http://tinyurl.com/33f3kb, with a semi-transparent grey drop-shadow on the drop-down part of the menu, and I'm still not clear whether that's possible?

Drop shadows are only possible with IE5.5+

Version 6 of the menu is being developed to add dropshadow support for all browsers though - due out soon

Hi,

The guys are right, If you mean the kind of drop shadows you can set with IE filters where you just set a code and there it is. That's done with Microsoft IE Filters and Transisitions which are proprietary to IE.

But if you just want it to look like that you should be able to do it with a graphic which is how most of the so-called 'css dropshadows' tutorials do it. If you can give me an idea about which menu you want to use and how, I'd be glad to try setting up a demo for you.

HI Ruth

I would rather not use any IE-specific features if I can help it, as I want it to work in all standards-compliant browsers as well as in IE.

I would like the menu to look similar to the Firefox one, and for its drop-shadow to look similar to the drop-shadow one gets in all Windows XP drop-down menus (unassuming you have drop-shadows switched on in your XP settings).

For a mock-up of the overlibmws pop-up's drop-shadow, which works in all css-compliant browsers, see: http://tinyurl.com/35ppr8 (hover over either the picture or the text to see the pop-ups). For that mock-up I made the drop-shadow is only 1px wide, but for a menu I think it would be 3px or so. But in terms of opacity level and colour, my mock-up's drop shadow has about the look I'm after.

Whoops - I meant "assuming", not "unassuming"! Also I'm not sure what you mean by "which menu you want to use and how" other to say than that I'd like to create a menu that looks similar to the Firefox or possible the Safari one.

Hi,

It can be done but not with that js thing. Or at least I don't know how you'd apply that to the menu, somehow you'd have to figure out the programming and how to attach other css to certain parts of it.... However, you can do it with css and bgimages. I created a menu that way at the below link. You'll need to look at the images and the css in the download and the data file to see how I did it. It's not hard, but it becomes involved to explain. In essence what I did was create images and call them through css which allows them to be positioned. I always create them large enough to compensate for any font size done by the visitor who needs larger fonts. That way when the menu gets larger the background still shows as it should. Hope this helps. After you take a look at it, if you have questions post back.

Also see the post below with a different link which addresses your below posted want that it look more like a shadow.

Ruth's example is what's available with the current menu system, and does simulate a drop-down shadow look. As Andy clearly explained, what you're looking for will be available in the v6 menu system, which is not too far away.

Thanks, John. Are you able to give any indication as to whether soon means a week or two, or more like a month, or more than a month?

Hi,

I know I can't give any indication. We are volunteers so we really don't know the ins and outs of Milonic. I do have a better one that does look like a shadow, it's taken me a long time to figure out how to get that shadow in my graphics program. I don't do much graphic stuff any more. I'll post back with a link when I get it up.

OK, I've got the shadow menu up with explanation and a download so you can see how it was done.
